About the UM Emergency Alert System
UM Emergency Alert is a mass notification system, comprised of a variety of methods by which the university, without undue delay, will notify students, faculty and staff of an active, major campus emergency.
The U-M Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) activates the UM Emergency Alert system when campus public safety may be at risk during an active emergency. Alert messages are brief and are delivered as quickly as possible to the campus. Alerts can be activated anytime, 24 hours a day.
U-M provides the following notification methods during emergencies:

- Text message (SMS) to cell phone
- Voice message to any phone
- Email to university email address
- Michigan App push notification
- Digital signage in campus buildings
- University and DPSS websites
Examples of active emergency situations include:
- A person with a weapon actively threatening campus.
- A tornado or a severe thunderstorm with expected winds greater than 75 miles per hour is predicted for the county.
- A major hazardous material spill is impacting a large portion of campus.
- An emergency reduction in operations declared by U-M administration.
Localized incidents within buildings (such as a small fire, hazardous material spill in a lab, or unconfirmed bomb threat) likely will not require a mass notification.
UM Emergency Alert Delivery Options
All active students, faculty and staff with a university email address automatically are registered to receive notifications from the UM Emergency Alert system.

Faculty and Staff
Students, faculty and staff who wish to receive a voice or text message alert must register telephone or cell phone numbers in Wolverine Access. These notification options are available to active students, faculty and staff with a uniqname and UMICH password. You may register up to four telephone numbers to receive voice messages, and up to four additional cell phone numbers to receive text messages.
Michigan App Push Notifications (iPhone & Android)Download the Michigan App:
Anyone with the Michigan App on their mobile device may choose to receive UM Emergency Alerts for the Ann Arbor campus from the Michigan App, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, visitors, vendors, community members and others not affiliated with the university.
To receive UM Emergency Alerts from the app, download the Michigan App from the Apple App Store (for iPhones) or Google Play (for Androids) and open the app at least once. Push notifications for the Michigan App must be enabled in your device settings. The app notifications are short messages pushed to app-enabled devices such as smartphones and tablets.
