11th Annual Purple Run breaks records

The 11th Annual Purple Run 5k was held on Saturday, and a record number of registrants helped support an important cause.

“Today was really special, and we had so many energetic people here,” said Maureen Burke of the UMPD Special Victims Unit. “More people signed up and supported this cause than ever, and we’re so happy to put this event on every year. This year was also special because we had the family of Gina Bryant here, who was a victim of domestic violence.”

Nearly 300 people signed up for the event hosted by the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS), Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD), and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office to help support the SafeHouse Center.

The event kicked off with speeches by University of Michigan Police Department Chief Crystal James, AAPD Executive Deputy Chief Jason Forsberg, Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savat, SafeHouse Center Executive Director Christine Watson, and U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell.

“We are always so grateful every year when this event happens,” said Watson. “This is a wonderful event, and it ensures that we can continue our mission to spread awareness to these issues. It’s a beautiful day and we have so many people that are having fun and supporting our cause.”

The SafeHouse Center strives to help survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout Washtenaw County. For more information on the SafeHouse Center, click here.
