Since its legalization in the state of Michigan in 2019, billions of dollars have been spent on online sports betting. With the rollout of phone apps, it is more accessible than ever. The American Gambling Association (AGA) predicts that more than $3.1 billion will be bet throughout March Madness.

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) understands that some members of the community may participate in the activity. However, it’s important to understand that gambling involves several inherent risks, and over time, most people are likely to lose more than they win.

If you or someone you know is partaking in online gambling, here’s some tips and things to look out for.

Tips for safe gambling
  • Limit or don’t consume alcohol or cannabis while betting
  • Know the gambling language and how each app works before you wager
  • Set time limits – there are tools available on many slot machines, mobile and internet gambling sites to help you monitor your play
  • Only gamble with money you have and can lose, never borrow money or use money intended for necessities, like rent or food
  • Don’t try to win back what you’ve lost
  • Don’t think of gambling as a way to win money for a trip, to pay bills, or to pay off debt
  • If you’re no longer having fun, stop playing
  • Don’t depend on “good luck” strategies – they don’t increase your chances of winning
Signs of a gambling problem

Signs of a gambling problem or issue to monitor can include:

  • Changes in personal behavior or mood
  • Secrecy and lying about the amount of time and money spent gambling online
  • Frequent requests for money
  • Stealing things to fund betting activities
  • Problems at school or socially with others
  • Increased risky behavior, such as skipping classes or school
AGA Tips

The AGA promotes the following tips for anyone who may be sports betting during March Madness:

  • Set a Budget: Determine how much you are willing to spend and stick to it.
  • Keep it Social: Betting should be a form of entertainment shared with others.
  • Know the Odds: Understand the games and your chances of winning.
  • Play Legally: Use regulated, legal betting platforms.
  • Keep Your Cool: The result of a bet – win or lose – is not an invitation to criticize players, coaches, or officials online or in-person.
