Graduation and Moving Out: End of the Year Safety Tips

Graduates in caps decorated with blue and yellow flowers and block "M" face a stage at a University of Michigan ceremony; mood is celebratory.

The semester is winding down, and another University of Michigan chapter is coming to an end. Many students will be leaving campus, either for the summer or as graduates. This means more visitors around Ann Arbor, and activity happening on campus as well. To help ensure a safe and exciting year-end, the Division of Public Safety and Security is sharing the information below.

Graduations

It is important that you know what you can and cannot bring into the ceremony before you arrive. There are many May ceremonies happening around campus this month, but most visitors will be heading to Michigan Stadium to celebrate loved ones at Spring Commencement.

Reminders

  • No purses, bags, wristlets, or cases of any size are allowed in Michigan Stadium, except for medical reasons.
  • No weapons, bags, bottles, drones, selfie sticks, or umbrellas. To see a complete list of permitted and prohibited items, click here.
  • Permitted items that will not fit in pockets—including medicine, medical equipment, and diapers for small children—should be placed in a clear plastic bag, quart- or gallon-size only.

If you are attending a different graduation ceremony, it is important to know the rules for those venues as well. For more information about other ceremonies, click here.

Moving Out

  • For undergraduate students, residence halls close Friday, May 1, 2026, at 11 a.m. A few things that you should do before you move out:
  • Set your thermostat to the auto-setting
  • Unplug window air conditioning units
  • Unloft your bed, if you are able
  • Be sure to check all room drawers/shelves for items
  • Clean and unplug refrigerators
  • The room should be visually clear of all trash and personal items
  • Secure and close the windows and the room door

Congratulations to all of our Wolverines who are graduating this spring!
