Keep it Safe! Everyday Tips to Protect Yourself & Your Stuff

A thriving university community is built not just on academic achievement, but on a strong sense of safety and trust among its members. At the University of Michigan, everyone plays a vital role in keeping our campus safe—starting with simple, everyday actions. Here’s how you can do your part:
Keep Valuables with You
Whether you’re heading to a lecture, grabbing a coffee, or studying at the library, never leave items like laptops, phones, and wallets unattended. Opportunistic thefts can happen in just seconds, so make it a habit to keep your valuables with you at all times.
Lock It Up
Bikes and scooters are favorite targets for thieves. Always use a sturdy lock, even if you’re leaving your ride for just a few minutes. The same goes for shared spaces like residence hall rooms or study lounges—secure doors and lockers when you step away, even briefly.
See Something? Say Something
If you notice suspicious activity, don’t hesitate to report it. For emergencies, call 911 right away. For non-emergencies, use the DPSS (Division of Public Safety and Security) phone number or app—it’s quick, accessible, and may prevent a crime before it happens.
Register Your Property
Take a few minutes to register your bike, laptop, or other valuables with DPSS. Registration increases the chances of recovering your property if it’s ever stolen. It’s a small step that can make a big difference.
Remember: Safety Starts With You
A safer U-M is created one responsible action at a time. By taking small, everyday precautions, we help to protect not only ourselves but the entire community. Let’s look out for one another—because a safer campus starts with each of us.
