What does the DPSS University Security and Safety Services department do?

DPSS University Security and Safety Services provides coordinated security support for the University of Michigan community. The department plays a key role in supporting high-profile and special events, while also offering security services and guidance for students, faculty, staff, and visitors across all campuses. From event security planning to safety consultations and resource coordination, University Security and Safety Services helps ensure a safe and secure environment for all.

Can DPSS University Security and Safety Services help with major or high-profile events?

Yes. DPSS University Security and Safety Services assists with major and high-profile events such as large sporting events, high-attendance programs, VIP visits, campus speakers, and events that may require enhanced security planning. The department helps evaluate security needs and coordinate appropriate measures to support a safe event environment.

What if I’m unsure whether my event needs security?

If you’re unsure whether your event needs security, complete the Event Security Request form. The DPSS Special Events Team will review your request, work with you to determine if security is required, and recommend whether it should be provided by DPSS or a private vendor.

How do I decide whether to use DPSS resources or private security?

It is typically recommended to use DPSS security services resources when your event may involve:

  • Security risks
  • Public controversy
  • High attendance
  • The need for law enforcement presence or enhanced threat monitoring
  • Uncertainty about whether security is required

It is generally recommended to use private security when your primary needs include:

  • Door monitoring
  • Building watch
  • Fire watch
  • Tent watch
  • Low-risk stationary posts
  • A general security presence without law enforcement authority

Private security vendors must receive DPSS clearance code approval before you contract their services.

After reviewing your request, the DPSS Special Events Team will advise whether DPSS or a private vendor is the most suitable option.

What private security companies are approved for University-wide use?

The University has contracts with several approved private security companies that provide hourly, unarmed, uniformed guard services with 24/7 dispatch. A DPSS clearance code is required before initiating a contract. Departments may select any of the approved vendors, which are listed below in alphabetical order. Please visit the links for contact information for each approved private security company.

What is a clearance code, and why do I need to request one from DPSS?

A clearance code is an approval number issued by DPSS that authorizes a department to hire a private security company for a specific event. This code is required any time a department plans to hire a private security company. To request a clearance code, complete the DPSS Event Security Request form. A separate clearance code must be obtained for each new event.

Who is responsible for paying for security services?

If private security is used, the requesting department pays the vendor directly and manages all billing and scheduling. If DPSS resources are utilized, DPSS will invoice the department for the associated staffing costs. In both cases, the requesting department is responsible for obtaining the itemized invoice from the private security vendor or DPSS.
