Building Evacuation Signs

The University of Michigan has a campus standard for emergency signs. Buildings are not required to have emergency signs; however, if building staff decides to have signs, they are to conform to this standard.

Emergency signs are not intended for general wayfinding purposes. A separate map or digital signs should be provided to assist with wayfinding.

Emergency signs are not funded centrally, and each unit must have dedicated funding for its project.

Process

  1. Units requesting signs must:
    1. Identify funding
    2. Assign a facility point person
    3. Contact DPSS Emergency Management for vendor options
  2. Contact vendors for cost estimates or quotes
  3. Vendor will conduct a walk-through and create draft signs for review.
  4. Signs and locations will be sent to the facility point person, Emergency Management and EHS Fire Safety Services for review.
  5. Once approved, signs will be installed.

Please review the Guidelines for the Emergency Signage for more information.
